Be Careful What You Wish For

When my husband and I decided to build our “dream house,” we had to sell our existing home to come up with the down payment. Our current home at the time was nine years old and needed some major updating to fit the current market. At the same time, I was launching my first ever women’s leadership conference, plus commuting weekly to L.A. to deliver a series of 12 live training sessions to one of the major independents out there.

I was so busy and exhausted, I kept saying, “I wish I could have a break. I wish I didn’t have to handle the move. I wish I could delay starting the classes in L.A. at least another week. I’m so busy, I just need a break.”

There’s an old adage, be careful what you wish for, because that’s exactly what I got. I fell and broke my elbow. Not only could I not help with the move, I had to delay the training in Los Angeles by one week and was forced to take time off to recuperate—not the “break” that I had in mind.

Where you focus influences what you attract—be careful what you wish for, or as Byron always used to tell me, “Be definite with infinite.”

So, avoid saying you need a “break.” Instead, take some “well-deserved time off with my family and friends,” or just to “relax and unwind.”
